Injection Moulding is certainly the most used process for manufacturing plastic items. However, it is necessary to distinguish between moulds for thermoplastics and moulds for thermosetting plastics: the former ones take advantage of the viscosity and malleability typical of the thermoplastic polymer when heated at high temperatures. In this way it is possible to produce plastic components of any kind by cooling the fluid injected into the mould.

The moulding of plastic materials presupposes the use of specific utensils and machinery, purposely designed and made for this type of industrial production process. To obtain an overall idea of the instruments and equipment needed to make thermoplastic materials, it is indispensable to have a clear idea of the entire production process.
A characteristic of all thermoplastic type materials is that they become viscose and semi-liquid when brought to temperatures of around 200-250° C. Unlike thermosetting materials which, when they reach such temperatures, lose their original physical properties once and for all, thermoplastic materials do not alter their structure and can be brought to melting point every time they are heated. This is a very important characteristic because it permits using specific machinery for injection moulding which makes it possible to model the plastic material in its viscose state according to the shape of the pre-built mould.
But what exactly does thermoplastic component moulding equipment consist of? To answer this question suffice it to describe the production process: thermoplastic material still in solid state (granular) is collected up in a hopper from where it drops by gravity inside a “plasticizing cylinder” where it is melted thanks to the application of special electric heating elements; next, the “plasticizing screw” regulates the transit of the fluid inside the actual mould, designed and built to the shape required by the customer.
